Diabetic Retinopathy FAQs

Who is Most at Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy?

Individuals with Type I and Type II diabetes are most susceptible to diabetic retinopathy. Generally, the longer you have the disease and the less successfully you manage your blood sugar levels, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy.

I Control My Blood Sugar Well. Can I Still Develop Diabetic Retinopathy?

Yes. As mentioned previously, the longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy. People with Type I who have controlled their blood sugar for decades can develop retinopathy. The inflammation and other changes to the blood vessels that result from diabetes appear to be responsible for those developments.

How Is Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosed?

During your eye exam, your optometrist tests your visual acuity (your ability to see details at a distance on an eye chart). They will also check the inside of your eyes, particularly the retina, looking for evidence of problems. They may perform a fluorescein angiogram, injecting dye into the bloodstream to spot leaking blood vessels in the retina.

How Often Should Those with Diabetes Have an Eye Exam?

Individuals diagnosed as diabetic should have their eyes examined shortly after being diagnosed. Your eye doctor should be informed of your diagnosis in advance so they can adjust their exam procedures accordingly. After the initial exam, an eye doctor should examine your eyes yearly if they have not found indications of diabetic retinopathy.

If evidence of diabetic retinopathy or other retinal issues is identified and depending on the nature and severity of the issues, you may need more frequent eye exams.
